The Artist

Born in the Federation of Nyasaland, now Malawi, schooling between Northern and Southern Rhodesia, now Zambia and Zimbabwe, and University in Cape Town, South Africa Rory McDougall’s whole life revolves around his absolute love of Central Southern African and all that comes with the package.

Rory is based close to both the Zambezi River and the Kafue River in an agricultural area in the south of Zambia called Mazabuka; so on a daily basis he is gifted with inspiring material portrayed either through his paintbrushes, his photography or his enthusiastic, inspirational mentoring.

A qualified Zoologist and avid Birder, Rory is a self-taught artist, photographer, well-respected conservationist, Honorary Game Ranger as well as Qualified Professional Safari Guide.

Rory’s many life-changing challenges show in his varied styles and use of ever inspirational colours and mediums, and has led him to exhibit and sell in Galleries and Exhibitions throughout Zambia, UK, Malawi and South Africa, with a solo exhibition at the Wren Gallery, Burford, England.

Rory’s passion for birds, his fascination with their flight, structure and habits in general are a shared experienced through his art; however, his works also includes Wildlife and Landscapes from his personal encounters and research. He uses artistic licence along with his addictive humour in colour abstracts, with the ever present hidden African story awaiting recognition. Rory’s art also records his extensive global travels with a keen eye for the extraordinary.

Rory paints from his gallery at his home, interspersed with mentoring a very active “Art Group” that meets weekly. Many of his students have gone on to exhibit and sell their work.
